Nerpa - Baikal seal
Visitors of Baikal Museum (Russian Academy of Sciences Siberian Division) will be able to observe the life and habits of nerpa, Baikal seal in real time.
Video cameras were installed on a small island in the middle of Baikal where seals breeding ground is situated. The images will be transmitted on a screen in the museum. The works are almost finished and the projects launches this summer.
Siberian Division of the Russian Academy of Sciences received money for this project winning a grant in a program called "Changing museum in the changing world". Vladimir Fialkov, director of the Museum said: "Baikal nerpa is the only representative of mammals in the deepest fresh water lake on the Earth. It is a very cautious creature and does not let humans to approach them while it is very interesting for scientists to see how nerpa behaves under and above the water".
This would be the second interactive exposition in Baikal museum. The first one was installed three years ago. It is a camera looking like a deep-water apparatus with nine monitors transmitting images from the bottom of the lake creating an illusion of an immersion.
