Yellow-breasted Buntings orchestra tour

Region: Volga region 
Reserve: Kerzhensky Reserve 

Ancient Russian city Nizhny Novgorod is located in the middle stream of the great Russian river Volga. The region around the city is rich with untouched spruce and fir forests, vast floodplains of the Volga and its tributaries as well as with extensive steppe and marsh areas and agricultural fields. These pristine lands attracts various species of birds which spectacular orchestra we intend to enjoy during the week-end escape.
Our top-targeted species during the tour will be Yellow-Breasted bunting, Azure tit and Paddyfield Warbler. In addition to that marvelous late-spring singers we definetly watch over a hundred of other species during the tour.
Along with cozy accommodation site on the high bank of the river Shava you will also have a possibility to look around old Russian cities Nizhny Novgorod and Gorokhovets.

Itinerary:

Day 1

07:33 Arrival to Uren rail-way station from Moscow by train #110.
07:40 Breakfast in a cafe.
Transfer to the floodplain of Vetluga river to observe Yellow-breasted Buntings. Long walk (8 km) to watch nearly 30 pairs of these beautifull birds inhabit comparatively small area of the river banks. Their tunes are in the air all around the place. After the "concert" we return to the village Varnavino for lunch.
14:30 Lunch in a cafe.
15:00 Transfer to the valley of Shava river (3,5 hours) with stops for birding. We can observe Curlew and Black-tailed Godwit as well as Ural owl.
18:30 Arrival to the hotel. Accommodation. Dinner. Free time.

Day 2

Early morning birding in the floodplain of the Shava river. We observe a magnificent Azure Tit nesting here in hollows of willows. We''ll find Paddyfield Warbler and Savi's Warbler in the reed beds as well as Citrine Wagtail, Blyth's Reed Warbler and Bluethroat. Ortolan Buntings will wait us on small steppe slopes with feather grass .
Breakfast packed.
10:30 Departure to Gorokhovets with stops for burding. Along the way we can drive to the breeding area of Tawny Owl. Occasionally we can meet Booted Warbler and Foraging Montagu's Harrier, Pallid Harrier on the overgrown fields. Also we can see Gray-headed Woodpecker, Greenish Warbler, Red-breasted Flycatcher and Wryneck. Along the floodplain of the forest river Lukh we'll look for White-backed Woodpecker and maybe will meet Honey Buzzard. In the end we'll meet Great Grey Owls on the bog near the city. Common species for pine forests here are Crested Tit and Black Woodpecker. On the fringe of the bog we will look for Three-toed Woodpecker.
13:30 Lunch in a cafe.
18:00 Arrival to Gorokhovets. Dinner in a cafe.
18:46 Departure to Moscow by trian #733.
